Global Warming

The canals have frozen hard in Holland. As one the Dutch have slid out on to the ice, indulging their national passion for slipping through the landscape, contemplative and alone, or visiting with friends by the shortest route. Evidently it is more than a decade since the canals resumed their historic winter role.
A glance at Dutch painting shows that the way to a Dutchman's heart is via a frozen canal.

It is looking more and more like the new Ice Age, confidently predicted in 1975, has finally arrived, albeit slightly late.

Such a wonderful national sport Nomad. Better than football. I was told once that skating from Cambridge to Ely was not unusual in the middle of the last century.

Yes, Mr Saltmarsh was said to have skated from Cambridge to Ely in the winter of 1962. I doubt whether it has been done since.
