Penniless and Defenceless Under New Labour

This is the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, on its way, 'with a squadron of warships of the Northern Fleet of Russia', to joint exercises with the Turkish navy. There are to be 'cultural and sport programs' as well, and the crews of the Admiral Kuznetsov and the Admiral Levchenko will see the sights of the city of Marmaris, before continuing 'to fulfill their tasks in the the Mediterranean.'

Gulp.

Our aircraft carriers are cancelled.

Is this the subtle Turkish response to the growing likelihood of their being denied entry into the EU?

By the way, have no fear of Russian aircraft carriers; the great super efficient European Defence Force will provi....er, um...

There seems to be NOTHING we can do about our parlous situation.

We're certainly not capable of building an aircraft carrier E-K though we could buy one or two from the US, France, Italy, Poland or Russia. They all do good aircraft carrier. And there are some in stock that can be readily adjusted to our specifications. The New Labour announcement that there would be aircraft carriers built in bits all round the UK and then stitched together in Scotland served its purpose, quietened specific parts of the Labour clientele for a bit. They even have names - the Queen Elizabeth and the Prince Charles if I recall, like those imaginary animals small children have to talk to and be friends with that they eventually grow out of. The Royal Navy probably talk to their imaginary aircraft carriers.

Are we sure the Turks want to be in the EU any more Nomad? The English aren't the only people who would prefer not to be.
