Envy is a perfectly reasonable sin, one of the seven deadlies. But that his soul is eaten by 'vile arrogant contempt' just because he came in ahead of the rest of us gives pause. Particularly those of us left of centre who are One Nation conservatives.

everyone else below him is a new entry therefore on the way up as opposed to freefalling into hell.
But he does play games with words, Godless, and is then surprised that others don't know the rules.
You are not a right of centre person, big or small 'C'? It's a brave stance and I would stand beside you except the decency of 'fair does' has been undermined by flashy continental philosophy and burning egoistic self advancement.
If only the Labour movement would pick itself up, dust itself off, and start all over again. It could, but it has to acknowledge that the last 11 years were a horrible creep to a Cheneyesque nightmare for personal profit.
The Labour movement is a great deal better and worth fighting for. If only to bury the New American Century even deeper in its own ordure.

Perhaps he's soft of centre.
I find the image of a plummeting, freefalling figure, feathers all ruffled, Blakeian grimaced, towards the pit quite distressing.
