Real Conservatives

The Member of Parliament for Welwyn and Hatfield has been appointed chairman of the Conservative Party.

Grant Shapps, who enjoys a well over 17,000 majority in a working people's constituency, represents the aspirational, meritocratic conservatism that is the answer to the sanctimonious authoritarianism of the modern Labour party.

I presume you say working peoples since there are no traditional working class left round here.welwyn hatfield is top heavy with middle class people with a goodly portion of the poor and students (which were once the same thing).Mr snapps when he's not calling himself mr green) is a self made man on the make but aren't they all.He may be a good choice for entertainment manager on the titanic but sadlyI cannot see them winning the next election.

Chief, Welwyn Hatfield was always marked out by highly skilled working people. But not by particularly large settlements of professionals and middle class others, like further over towards St Albans and south Bucks.

I'm surprised you think Hatfield is top heavy with middle class people.

I was listening to some friends who had gone house hunting in Hatfield who remarked there was no one about during the day - absolutely deserted, they said. They were unused to being in a town where most people were at work; central London always amazes me that nobody seems to be at work.

I like Grant Shapps' housing policies: reasonable, effective, civilised and humane. And why should a man not be self-made?

@Chief of men (really?)

"Mr snapps when he's not calling himself mr green) is a self made man on the make but aren't they all"

Good for him. Looking after himself and his family, as he should. After all, if you can't look after yourself you are no use to anyone, are you?

Chief is right to note how Hatfield has changed. Gone are the technicians and designers. Instead Hatfield is now poor, transient and disadvantaged. However it is surrounded by some of the most wealthy communities in the land. Mr Shapps lives in one. Curiously it used to have significant aircraft movements overhead.
