No Referendum

Rejecting in a referendum what the Labour Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer accepted last week in Brussels fails to provide sufficiently for the democratic expression of what is wanted by the electorate.

Only a general election, fought on the policies of remaining in the European Union as it is now constituted, or leaving on the friendliest of terms but with the governance of our country secured in our own hands, can do this; and only a general election can encompass the issues that must be decided, and recognize their centrality in the nature and structure of our country.

What was enacted last week by the Labour government was a democratic outrage.

A referendum is not enough.

Little avalanche ND? The United Kingdom is all signed up without there being consultation with Scotland (there's a constitutional mess all of its own).

The European core member states are successful in their objectives but, looking at the news and papers, offended by the spirit and language in which their ideal has been assaulted.

And driving the host state - Germany - to the point of excluding another member for what can only be called'inappropriate attitude' (goodness European countries were offended by the thinking that some of the fallen are worth more than others) was appalling diplomacy and disastrous politics.

At which point the Prime Minister prances in to see Pope Benedict and meets such a rebuke for his actions for years that he may care to reconsider the worth of the Church of England and recognize the weight and force of English history and its centuries' old choices; rather than his emotional persona and its satisfaction.

Papa Ratzinger's over all role in what has happened last week should not be under-estimated either.

Not for nothing were political and religious ritual taught as a single paper in the Arch and Anth Tripos.
