Kenneth Clarke is Now Our Only Hope of Economic Sanity

I couldn't care less who and what George Osborne is. Why is Kenneth Clarke not Conservative shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer?

Enough is enough of loyalty to this or that person. And enough is enough of rows over whether or not the United Kingdom should be, and how far it should be, involved in the European Union and its currency. This country needs sanity, fiscal and monetary sanity, regardless of Party or loyalties, and it needs it now.

I want to hear Clarke, not Osborne, tomorrow. And I haven't the slightest faith in anyone else to lead us out of the desperate straits we are in.

When my wife was a Conservative she noticed that everyone who'd met Ken loathed him.

Interesting. Osbourne is a sop but not sure I'd want Clarke either.

Clarke? A rhino-skinned Europhile Judas goat, I think.

Not a popular man, then.

Who else can sort out the economy and reinstate some sense to our financial regulation?

Sackerson is right but in the present circumstances Clarke may be the worst option apart from all the alternatives.

Kenneth Clarke a fanatical EUphile. He is a lawyer who could not be bothered to read the Maastricht Treaty before he signed it, more hemp & lamposts please

Redwood? Or is that blasphemous?

Ken Clarke had the brain, or rather the lack of toadying idiocy, to vote against Bliar's war on Iraq.
